On Monday, July 18, the European Commission signed a memorandum of understanding with , with a view to doubling natural gas imports to at least 20 billion cubic meters per year by 2027.
According to the commission, the country’s gas supply will increase from 8.1 billion cubic meters in 2021 to 12 billion cubic meters this year.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, admitted that “with this new memorandum of understanding, we are opening a new chapter in our energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, a key partner in our efforts to move away from Russian fossil fuels,” she said.
The agreement also seeks to make Azerbaijan a renewable energy partner, taking advantage of its potential in offshore wind energy and green hydrogen.
