The country’s “environmental debt” is increasing: this year Portugal is running out of resources six days earlier than in 2021.
Portugal sold out its entire environmental budget this year on Saturday, May 7th. Called “Earth Overshoot Day”, it is the day on which humanity has exhausted as many natural resources as planet Earth can renew in an entire year.
This year Portugal ran out of resources six days earlier than in 2021. “If every person on the planet lived like the average Portuguese person, humanity would require around 2.5 planets to sustain its resource needs,” according to the environmental association Zero.
In Portugal, food consumption (32% of the country’s ecological footprint). Mobility (18%) is one of the activities that contributes most to the Ecological Footprint.
